Anxiety can be all consuming in both body and mind

Anxiety isn’t just in the thoughts in your mind. Anxiety shows up in the body in really uncomfortable ways that can make you feel seriously ill. Anxiety can make it difficult to have confidence to truly do what you want and share with others who you really are.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Panic Attacks or the physical feelings of panic: I couldn’t breath, my heart was pounding so fast I thought I was having a heart attack.
  • Generalized Anxiety where general worry thoughts seem to be all consuming: I’m forever thinking of the negative things that could happen, and how things could go wrong.
  • Experiencing gastrointestinal distress such as bloating, gas, constipation: I find myself forgetting to eat & then I feeling guilty and overwhelmed with the thought of preparing food & my gut is all messed up.
  • Phobias or extreme fear of certain situations, or certain things, such as fear of flying, fear of snakes, fear of needles. My son freaks out each time he has to have a needle, and it takes days of convincing to get him to go for an immunization.
  • Social Anxiety or avoiding social situations: I feel like I’m going to make a mistake in front of my friends and they’ll laugh at me.
  • Separation Anxiety or extreme fear of being apart from a loved one: I can’t sleep when my boyfriend goes away for work and I can’t focus on anything but what bad thing might happen to him.


Obstacles to Seeking Therapy

Going for Anxiety counselling means I’m weak.

The belief you are weak if you need help managing your mental health and your emotions is a false belief created by stigma that still exists in our cultures. The fact of the matter is that seeking therapy means you are courageous and are prioritizing your own wellbeing. This is a proactive step to take to learn new ways of managing in very difficult circumstances.

I’ll have to talk about my childhood and I don’t want to do this.

The belief you need to dig up all your old hurts and probe into your childhood is a common belief about therapy. The truth is that anxiety counselling focuses on what is most important to you, and teaches tools for calming and techniques to help you feel better quickly in your current life.
