In times of uncertainty and political turmoil, hope can feel like a lost cause. Facing personal struggles, global crises, or unexpected setbacks, anxiety and fear can override any sense of hope for resolution in difficult circumstances. What is hope in the midst of economic upheaval? Where do we turn to find hope and security again when such uncertainty lingers all around us? Is hope for better times ahead just a distant flicker? Mental health and wellness depends on hope in the face of despair, strong direction in the face of uncertainty, resilience in the midst of trouble.
Why Hope Matters
Hope isn’t just wishful thinking—it’s a mindset that helps us endure hardship. Studies show that hope improves mental health, boosts resilience, and even strengthens the immune system. It gives us a reason to wake up and try again, even when everything feels overwhelming.
When we lose hope, we lose motivation. But when we nurture hope, even in the smallest ways, we begin to see new possibilities where we once saw dead ends. Intentionally nurturing hope is important at all times, and especially now when factors in our world create fear and stress. Purposefully building hope within and around us is a key to managing these difficult times.
Ways to Cultivate Hope in Difficult Times
1. Focus on What You Can Control
There will always be things beyond our control, but dwelling on them only fuels anxiety. Instead of watching the news on repeat, shift your attention to what you can influence and change—your mindset, your actions, and how you respond to challenges. Perhaps you can build connections in your family or neighborhood, inviting people to talk to each other, sharing even across differences, so that you focus on the humanness in all of us. Sharing kindness and understanding in the midst of turmoil builds connection and community. Such small steps forward can create a momentum of hope.
2. Find Strength in Past Struggles
Think back to a time when you faced hardship and overcame it. What got you through? What did you learn? How did you reach out and share with others? What resources did you draw on? Remembering your past resilience can remind you that you have the strength to get through this, too.
3. Surround Yourself with Positivity
Hope grows in the right environment. Seek out uplifting books, inspiring stories, and supportive people. Limit exposure to negativity, whether it’s toxic relationships or overwhelming news cycles. Be intentional on how you spend your time rather than mindlessly scrolling through social media where you are at the mercy of others’ opinions and stories. Purposefully focus on examples of positive actions, the beauty of nature, the signs of the coming spring. Take time for fun with friends and family that are positive and nurturing.
4. Take One Step at a Time
When everything feels uncertain, focus on the next right step. You don’t need to have everything figured out—just take small, consistent actions toward a better future. Tell yourself, “This is what I’m doing right now. This is my focus for today.” to keep yourself focused on the present. Tune in to what is simple and real, and what you can control. Stick to your basic routine and move forward one step at a time.
5. Practice Gratitude
Even in tough times, there’s always something to be grateful for. Gratitude shifts our perspective from what’s wrong to what’s still good. Try keeping a gratitude journal or simply pausing each day to acknowledge a small blessing. Take time at the end of the day to share with your family or friends what you are grateful for from that day. Talk about gratitude and pause to feel that emotion of gratitude flowing through you.
6. Lean on Faith or a Higher Purpose
For many, faith is a powerful source of hope. Whether through prayer, meditation, or reflection, connecting with something greater than yourself can bring peace and renewed strength. Spending time in a faith community or like minded group to nurture your spirit can greatly increase your sense of hope
7. Believe in New Beginnings
Nothing stays the same forever. Seasons change, wounds heal, and life moves forward. What feels like an ending today could be the beginning of something better tomorrow. Hope is about opening to something new, fresh, creative. A mindset that focuses on possibilities will certainly foster hope within you.
Hope is a Choice
Hope isn’t about ignoring reality—it’s about choosing to believe in possibilities despite it. It’s about trusting that even the hardest times won’t completely define us. There is more to life than suffering. Hope is what guides us forward to a stronger and more fulfilling reality.
So, if today feels heavy, take a deep breath. Know that you are not alone in this uncertainty. Make a choice to hold onto hope, even if it’s just a whisper. Reach out to others, share with like minded people and focus on the goodness and kindness that are still around you. Humans have a great ability to respond to crises with kindness, understanding and most of all, hope.
